Wednesday (6/18): “When you pray, fast, and give
alms”
Scripture:
Matthew
6:1-6, 16-18
1 "Be sure you do not do good things in front of others just to be
seen by them. If you do, you have no reward from your
Father in heaven.
2
When you give to the poor, do not be as those who
pretend to be someone they are not. They blow a horn in
the places of worship and in the streets so people may
respect them. For sure, I tell you, they have all the
reward they are going to get.
3
When you give, do not let your left hand know what your
right hand gives.
4
Your giving should be in secret. Then your Father Who
sees in secret will reward you.
5
"When you pray, do not be as those who pretend to be
someone they are not. They love to stand and pray in the
places of worship or in the streets so people can see
them. For sure, I tell you, they have all the reward
they are going to get.
6
When you pray, go into a room by yourself. After you
have shut the door, pray to your Father Who is in
secret. Then your Father Who sees in secret will reward
you.
16
"When you go without food so you can pray better, do not
be as those who pretend to be someone they are not. They
make themselves look sad so people will see they are
going with out food. For sure, I tell you, they have all
the reward they are going to get.
17
When you go without food so you can pray better, put oil
on your head and wash your face.
18
Then nobody knows you are going without food. Then your
Father Who sees in secret will reward you.
Meditation:
What is
the sure reward which Jesus points out to his disciples?
It is communion with God our Father. In him alone we
find the fulness of life and happiness, truth and
beauty, love and joy. Saint Augustine, the great fourth
century bishop of Hippo, wrote the following prayer in
his Confessions: When I am completely united to you,
there will be no more sorrows or trials; entirely full
of you, my life will be complete. The Lord rewards
those who seek him with humble and repentant hearts. He
renews us each day and he gives us new hearts of love
and compassion that we may serve him and our neighbor
with glad and generous hearts. Do you want to grow in
your love for God and for your neighbor? Seek him
expectantly in prayer, with fasting, and in generous
giving to those in need.
Prayer:
“Lord Jesus, give me a lively faith, a firm hope, a
fervent charity, and a great love for you. Take from me
all lukewarmness in meditating on your word, and
dullness in prayer. Give me fervor and delight in
thinking of you and your grace. Fill my heart with
compassion for others, especially those in need, that I
may respond with generosity.”
Psalm
31:20,21,24
20
You will hide them with You in secret from the sinful
plans of men. You keep them in Your tent in secret from
those who fight with tongues.
21
Honor and thanks be to the Lord. For He has shown His
great loving-favor to me when I was in a city with
armies all around.
24
Be strong. Be strong in heart, all you who hope in the
Lord.
